Literature & Art: Paris, Zola, and the Birth of Modern Painting

Travel back to the vibrant world of late 19th-century Paris, where literature and art transformed the cultural landscape. Through selected excerpts from Émile Zola’s L’Œuvre (The Masterpiece), this course explores the dramatic rise of Impressionism and the artists who challenged tradition to redefine modern art.

As we read Zola’s compelling novel, we will discover how literature, painting, and history intersected during one of France’s most creative periods. The course places Zola’s work alongside masterpieces by artists such as Manet, Monet, Cézanne, Renoir, and Degas, revealing the friendships, rivalries, and controversies that shaped the modern art movement.

In This Course You Will:

  •          Read and discuss selected passages from L’Œuvre, expanding your literary vocabulary while discovering Zola’s vivid realist style.
  •          Explore the artistic revolution of nineteenth-century Paris, from the official Salon to the groundbreaking Salon des Refusés.
  •          Learn about the real artists who inspired Zola’s characters and the historical events behind the novel.
  •          Analyze famous paintings, compare literary and visual representations, and participate in lively discussions—in French.
  •          Develop your speaking, reading, and analytical writing skills through engaging cultural activities.

Prerequisite: Intermediate French (B1 or equivalent)

Reading: Selected excerpts from L’Œuvre have been chosen for intermediate French learners, making this classic novel accessible while preserving its literary richness.
