America's 250th Lecture by Robert Henrey: Two Revolutions: The Unintended Consequence of France's Embrace of America
Robert’s presentation will explore one of history’s most intriguing paradoxes. The unintended consequences of the geopolitical motivations that led France’s Ancien Regime to unwisely deplete its treasure and political capital in support of the American Patriots. While it clinched the Patriot’s hard-won victory against the British, the ideals of the Founding Fathers also gave expression to an economically stressed professional class that was increasingly resentful of the privileges accorded France’s hidebound and repressive aristocracy. It gave rise to a second revolution whose violence and extremism sparked a reaction that would convulse Europe and usher in the politics of modernity.
